Cobs v Thurrock

The fireworks were certainly flying at the Reeves on Saturday afternoon, when The Cobs welcomed a resurgent Thurrock rugby club for a Canterberry Shield 3 league match.

With the warm up gone well, marshaled by Cobs coach John Brady. It was the home team who took the game to the away team, from a lineout 30meters from the Thurrock goal line, Matt Thomas was on target hitting Danny Edbrooke high at the back of the set piece. This set up the forward drive that led to the home teams first opportunity to go for the post, with Thurrock coming offside at the breakdown. Up stepped Shane Brady to kick the points on the 13 min mark, to take a well deserved lead of 3-0.
The game started to warm up with some hard hitting tackles going in from both sides. Prop Dan Walsh cover defence on the away team wing Dan Cousins, summed up the determined mood of the Cobs in not wanting to loose.
With 25 mins gone the Ref decided that the Thurrock No 6 had tackled too high on scrum half Nathan Brady and had no hesitation in showing him the yellow card. With the advantage to the home team Dia Hammond cooly kicked Staines 2nd pen to move the score on to 6-0.
The Thurrock 2nd team where not coming such a distance to give up without a fight. Open side Reeces Collins determination, eased the score line to 6-5 with a well taken try just before half time. To take the teams in for well earned break.

With the wind behind them, the Cobs Nathan Palmer drove hard from the start of the half into the away teams territory carrying the ball with gusto and pride. Supported by his fellow forwards.
Jason Bean at fly half kept asking question of the defence until his break led to some desperate defence work from the Thurrock full back. "Off side at the ruck, Penalty Staines". With another chance to increase the score, his time luck was not on the home teams side. After some explosive running from Jaun Moudon and Mike Connelly, Staines once again found themselves attacking the Thurrock goal line. This time it was Kit Cox who came up with the ball to claim the first home try of the day.
With the conversion missed the game was going well for the home team when on the 35th min Staines came offside at the ruck to give the away team a chance to close the gap 11-8.
Thurrock, where now in the hunt for a win. With their rampaging wings only being stopped by some excellent text book tackling. Staines had only one answer, Attack!. Jason Lee supported by Dan Major kicked and chased down the wing only for the Thurrock wing to knock on the kick. With the advantage Lee scooped up the ball to score near the posts, for an outstanding individual try. He duly converted his try to take the lead up to 18-8. Thurrock rallied at the end to score a conciliation three points, to end the game 18-11 to the Cobs in front of a good size jubilant crowd of supporters.
