The Cobs were unlucky to loose 30-28. Coming from 15-0 down and a sin bin in the first 10 mins.
A fight back started with Lewis Pruce scoring the first of his 3 debut tries after 20 mins of good forward play inspired by Luke Chalton and Matt Thomas at the contact area. The half time score was a respectable 20-14.
The Cobs continued to press hard for the next score. This led to a spilled ball which Westcliff kicked and went on to score under the post.
Fighting back, Staines created opportunity out wide and a score was for the taking but some fine defence stopped Dan Porter just short of the line. Ruck ball, scrum down, Staines put in. Natham Brady at scrum half swept the ball to Jack Quirk who danced under the post to touch down. Jason Lee-27-21 converted the try.
This inspired the players to go for the win. Peter Freeth ran hard at the now tiring defence and skillfully passed the ball for Pruce to score his 3rd try bringing the score to 27-28.
With the wind behind the home team a penalty was awarded and slotted over to break the disappointed Cobs hearts. Final score 30-28.
