Child Protection Policy

The RFU has implemented a policy for the welfare of young people in rugby. This policy has been adopted by Staines RFC. A full copy of the policy can be obtained from the Club Welfare Officer or from www.rfu.com. The policy outlines the following key areas:
  • It recognises the responsibility of all those involved in rugby (professional and volunteers) to safeguard and promote the interests and well being of the children and young players with whom they are working.
  • It provides a framework on recruitment, selection, suitability and deployment of individuals working with young people.
  • It emphasises the value of working closely in partnership with other coaches, parents, professionals and volunteers to protect children and young players from harm and discrimination.
  • It acknowledges that abuse does take place in sport and that raising awareness and understanding of the main forms of abuse and establishing communication and reporting procedures if abuse is suspected will further safeguard young players, coaches and all others working within the game.
There are four main types of abuse: emotional, neglect, physical and sexual. Abuse is a powerful and emotive term used to describe ways in which children are harmed, usually by individuals and often by those they know and trust. It is not always easy to differentiate poor practice from abuse, intentional or unintentional. It is not, therefore, the responsibility of employees or volunteers in rugby union to determine whether or not abuse is taking place. It is, however, their responsibility to identify poor practice and possible abuse and to act if they have a concern about the welfare of a young person. Bullying is not always easy to define and will not always be an adult abusing a young person. The three main types of bullying are physical, verbal and emotional.

It is understandable that those who are motivated, loving and caring individuals with a deep commitment to their sport, are reluctant to believe that their children may be suffering harm in the rugby environment or at home. It may be difficult to accept that children could be at risk because of the way the organisation is run and the attitudes of those involved. Levels of awareness need to be raised without creating an atmosphere of anxiety or suspicion. However, a basic principle should be:
  • If you become aware of anything which causes you to feel uncomfortable, you should talk to the Club Welfare Officer about it in confidence. If a child needs immediate medical attention, call an ambulance and the doctor should be informed that the concern relates to a child protection issue. Inform the police at the same time. Non-action is not an option. The welfare of the young person is paramount.
Help us to create a safe environment in which the children can play and learn at Staines.

Gillian Cottrell, Club Welfare Officer.
